After discussion with facebook colleagues I decided to create the addthis social bookmarking club for internet marketers and anyone else who wants to improve their website’s position in search engine results.

The purpose of the addthis social bookmarking club is to create a group of like minded people who will bookmark each others sites with social bookmarking services. A database of websites will be maintained and these sites will published to the group on a rotational basis. Each week members will receive an email containing a list of websites to visit and consider for bookmarking. IF members believe a site offers valuable content they then bookmark it.

Note: To simplify the bookmarking process I recommend installing bookmarklet code for websites available from http://www.addthis.com. Or the ‘Sociable’ bookmarklet for wordpress blogs available from Yoast.com. This blog uses the sociable plugin and I recommend it as one of the best wordpress plugins available.

Members do NOT need to visit every site on the weekly list but please attempt to bookmark at least two sites per week

The addthis social bookmark club is run on an honor system. Members are REQUESTED to bookmark sites but are not REQUIRED to. Just remember, the success or failure of this club is entirely dependent upon it’s members.

As the group grows the list of weekly sites will also grow because we don’t want 1000 members all bookmarking only 10 sites and because it would take too long for all members sites to be rotated.

The club is double opt-in and all subscriptions are handled by GetResponse email marketing which allows changes to subscription details at any time simply by clicking the link at the bottom of any message received. Members can change the website being bookmarked at any time hitting reply on a received email and sending the new website URL to be added to the database.

Bookmarking club members may also receive periodic promotional emails regarding social media & backlinking related products and services but will NEVER be contacted more than twice in one week.

There are a huge number of excellent plugins available to make blogging simpler and more profitable. When it comes to SEO plugins I recommend the ‘All in One SEO pack’ as one of the best wordpress plugins available.

KEYWORDS: This is the tag that is most debated by SEO experts as to it’s effectiveness. The problem is that when they first developed this tag search engines relied heavily upon it and this led to people abusing the tag by using highly popular keywords in the tag even when they had nothing to do with the actual content. This is like using a keyword of ‘online dating’ on a legal firms website… it’s totally inappropriate! As a result of this abuse, search engines reduced the emphasis on the keyword tag and started focusing more on page content.

However, my experience in using this tag indicates that when appropriate keywords that match page content are used then there is a resulting increase in the amount of organic traffic coming from search engines.

Please note that it is crucial that keywords used be appropriate to page content or your site could even be penalized by search engines. SEO centro provide a free meta tag analyzer for you to compare your content to your meta tags.

The reason I believe the all in one SEO pack to be one of the best wordpress plugins (and certainly the best blog SEO plugin) is because it simplifies the addition of these elements by including fields for you to add them at the bottom of the post creation/editing page. Keyword research is the most essential step to take before creating a site or even purchasing a domain because you want to include keywords in the domain.

Many new marketers starting in web site marketing neglect keyword research altogether or complete only basic research by guessing what keyword to rank for and checking how many searches per month are performed for it. This approach is insufficient if you want to succeed. Target the incorrect keyword and you’ll end up wondering why you have no traffic.

So how do you do keyword research?

The most accurate keyword research tool is https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal This tool is suggested since statistics are specific to google, the undeniable search engine leader with 90% of overall searches.

Set up a database for your research. Label your columns: Searches, Keyword, Competition, Allintitle and Allinurl

Here is an explanation of each heading:
1. Searches: Monthly searches for the specific keyword/keyphrase
2. Keyword: The actual keyword or keyphrase
3. Competition: The number of pages targeting that particular keyword
4. Allintitle: The number of sites targeting the keyword in their title.
5. Allinurl: The quantity of sites with the keyword in their domain name

The first two columns of information come directly from the Google tool. The other three columns are investigated on google by performing the following searches.

To ascertain competition carry out a search for your keyword with quotes (“) around it (example. “Weight loss”). Google will return results from websites targeting the exact keyword/keyphrase. This filters out sites targeting ‘weight’ or ‘loss’ alone. Insert the quantity of results generated in the competition column beside the keyword. This number is discovered at the top right hand side of the browser window.

To discover how many websites include a keyword in their titles perform an allintitle search. The format for this is allintitle:your keyword. Substitute ‘your keyword’ with the keyword you want statistics for. Enter the number of results returned into the allintitle column beside the keyword.

If you buy PPC (pay per click) traffic from search engines it’s important to target converting keywords.

Two factors determine the best keywords to target:

1. The amount of searches (higher is better)
2. The amount of opposition (lower is better)

Try to locate keywords with both of these factors. Balance is the crucial factor here. Each webpage should target one primary keyword and contain several associated keywords. Try to target combination keywords that contain more than one keyword like ‘online marketing techniques’ which targets three keywords including; online marketing techniques, online marketing and marketing techniques. Although two word keyphrases have increased opposition making them more difficult to rank for, using them means you won’t have to add them later on when you do desire to rank for them.

Analytics 360

Analytics 360 supplies a snapshot of your google analytics stats directly in your blog dashboard. The full range of stats isnt’ available, just visit numbers, referring sites and popular pages. But it does include a link that will take you to your analytics account if you want to see the full range of statistics. Additionally, if you have a mailchimp autoresponder account you will be able to see the effect of your email campaigns on blog traffic. The Analytics 360 plugin is available from Mailchimp or directly through the ‘add plugin feature available in your wordpress dashboard.

Sociable Social bookmarking plugin

See the social bookmarking icons at the bottom of this post? These are part of the sociable social bookmarking plugin which boasts a staggering 95 available bookmarking services to choose from. The plugin is available from Yoast.com. Please note that I have edited the plugin to make the icons larger and added different icons. Botproof Captcha

These days, a majority of blog comments are posted automatically by computer programs known as ‘Bots’. The botproof capcha plugin foils automated commenting by displaying a dynamic, constantly changing image that bots are unable to decipher. This free plugin effectively stymies those programs and protects your blog from the majority of spammy comments. When I first created this blog I was receiving about 10 spam comments per day. After installation of the Botproof Captcha plugin that figure dropped to about one comment every two days. The Botproof Captcha plugin is available from http://www.botproof.com/wordpress.html

WP-Ban

This last wordpress plugin once again has to do with blog security and killing comment spam. If you install the botproof captcha plugin it will stop automated comments. Unfortunately you will still receive human visitors who leave off-topic comments and comments filled with spam links. They will sometimes leave exactly the same comment on several posts and will return on a daily basis to leave more comments. These are what I refer to as ‘nuisance commenters’. To help combat against these types of comments I installed the WP-Ban plugin. This plugin allows you to block access to your blog from IP addresses and hosts that have a history of comment spam on your blog. You can edit the page that spammers are forwarded to. This plugin is available from LesterChan or directly through through the ‘add plugin’ utility available in your wordpress dashboard in versions 2.7+.

One of the most important aspects of SEO is the number of backlinks (links on external sites that point to your site) that your site has. Large numbers of backlinks (especially those on related sites) give search engines an indicator of how important a website is. The more backlinks, the more important a site is considered to be. So you need to know How to do keyword research effectively

If you want to know how to do keyword research effectively I recommend Google’s keyword tool at adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Don’t worry, despite being created to help advertisers choose keywords to target in adwords, it also provides an excellent resource for people performing keyword research for their own sites. I recommend this tool since the statistics are specific to google… the undisputed search engine leader.

How To Know Which Keywords To Target

But a person searching for ‘Tom Tom GPS system’ is a much more targeted prospect. And ‘Tom Tom GO 930 prices’ is even more targeted since it indicates that they are looking to buy. Yes, far less people will search for that term, but those who do are in buying phase. It’s better to grab them in buying phase than in research phase!

Don’t target keywords that are too general simply because they have more searches. What you need is traffic that converts to sales. As you gain SEO experience and your site gains reputation (i.e. Google pagerank) you can target keywords with more competition. This way, you slowly build up the amount of traffic your site receives from search engines. Of course, you can purchase traffic from search engines by running PPC (pay per click) campaigns. But again it’s important to target converting keywords.

Ideally, each page of a website should target one primary keyword and a couple of secondary related keywords. It’s great if those keywords are composite keywords. Composite keywords being keyphrases containing more than one keyword such as ‘online marketing techniques’ because it contains three keywords
including; online marketing techniques, online marketing and marketing techniques. While two word keyphrases will have higher competition making them more difficult to rank for, having them in place will mean you won’t have to add them later when you want to build your ranking for them… and yes, you will want to rank for them in the future. SEO is an ongoing process.

Note the statement that ‘each PAGE of a website should target one primary keyword and a couple of secondary related keywords’. Subpages will target different keywords. Ultimately, a site containing 50 individual pages can target 50 main keywords and around 100 secondary keywords or more.

So what determines the best keywords to target? Two factors:

1. The number of searches (the higher the better)
2. The amount of competition (the lower the better – under 20,000 for inexperienced marketers.)

These factors should be combined. Don’t target a keyword simply because it has a lot of searches. The more general a search term is the more competition there will be to rank for it. Try to find keywords with both factors.

So know you know how to do keyword research effectively. Go out and do it, find those profitable keywords and good luck with your online endeavors.

When it comes to the art of receiving free traffic directly from search engines everybody seems to have their own opinion of how to get page one rankings for a website. Unfortunately, search engines like google do not reveal their algorithm to anybody… I doubt even Matt Cutts would entirely understand how websites are ranked, although he would doubtless have a better idea than most.

So how to do know where to focus our SEO efforts?

In my experience, the most important factor in gaining free traffic from search engines involves GETTING BACK TO BASICS!

Sure, all these new fangled techniques involving social media sites, video and audio files etc have their place in helping a site get good rankings. But if a site is poorly optimized to start with then the effectivness of these techniques will be limited… and lets face it, the vast majority of sites out there are poorly optimized. For goodness sakes, most website owners don’t even bother to do keyword research, or if they do then the research is rudimentary at best (i.e. how many searches does the desired keyword get?) As a result they end up targeting keywords that may be too broad or have far too much competition… then they wonder why they’re not getting traffic from search engines… sheesh!

So what are the basics? The basics are:

1. Domain name:
2. Website Title:
3. Backlinks:

Well, you could also say that keyword research is basic. I will deal with this aspect in another article. For now the assumption will be made that thorough keyword research has been performed and potentially profitable keywords chosen.

So, to deal with each aspect individually:

DOMAIN NAME: Every website page should target specific keywords. With the main domain it is important to utilize the primary keyphrase within the domain name. For example, if your name was Stinkbottom Fartworthy and you had a site about dog training you wouldn’t name your site StinkbottomFartworthy.com, no matter how memorable it was because it has nothing whatsoever to do with dog training. To rank for the keyword ‘dog training’ it is far better to use the domain name dogtrainingtips.com. Even though this particular keyword would have huge competion if your content matched the domain you would eventually gain a reputation as a dog training site and rank well for the keyword.

Having said this, it is important to note that initially you need other pages on your site that target much less competitive keywords like, ‘how to train small dogs’, ‘how to teach your dog tricks’ etc. These pages will generate traffic for your site. As you pull in more of these ‘longtail’ keywords (keywords containing more than three words) the site will begin to rank for the more competitive keyword in the domain name.

So how do you include longtail keywords in urls? That’s easy, simply include the keyword in the filename of the html file. So www.dogtrainingtips.com can have a subpage of how-to-teach-your-dog-tricks.html which means that the direct access url becomes www.dogtrainingtips.com/how-to-teach-your-dog-tricks.html. If your site happens to be a blog you can set your post permalink (permanent link) to use the post title as the page id. That way you end up with the same url.

WEBSITE TITLE: Your website title is found in the header section of html code. The title is the text that appears in the colored bar across the top of the browser window. A lot of sites do not optimize this section but correct optimization goes a LONG way to convincing search engines that your site should be ranked for the keywords contained in this tag… especially when the page content matches aswell.

BACKLINKS: This is absolutely the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of SEO. This is where the social media sites etc come into play. A backlink by definition, is a link on another site that points to your website.

There are two very important things to keep in mind with backlinks.

1. Backlinks on related sites are far more valuable than those on unrelated sites. In the example of Mr Fartworthy’s dogtraining site. For him to have backlinks on a site about dog training (or even dog breeding) is going to be much more effective in increasing the search engine ranking of his site than having them on a site about trucks. In general, one link on a related site is worth 5-10 links on completely unrelated sites.

2. If you want your site to rank for a specific keyword, use that keyword as the anchor text for your backlinks. Anchor text is the text that people click to visit your website. So to rank for the keyword ‘dog training tips’ you would use that as the anchor text. It is important to note that not all backlinks should use this anchor text as it looks unnatural to search engines. So it’s good to use other anchor text also, like your name or some other keyword.

Everyone knows that the more visitors a site receives the more successful the site is. Free traffic direct from search results in search engines is preferable to paid traffic. To receive these visitors direct from search results a site must rank well with search engines for it’s chosen keywords.

So how do you optimize your blog for search engines?

Here are five tips on how to optimize your blog to improve search engine rankings.

Tip #1: Name Your Pages with Keywords

One of the easiest ways to improve your search engine rankings is to utilize keywords in your domain name and page names. This has high value with search engines and automatically helps your site and pages to rank better. Though it should be noted that the domain should be appropriate to the content on it. Search engines compare your domain name and page names to the content within to decide whether it is appropriate to rank the site for the keywords included in the domain. WordPress blogs can be set to use post titles as permalinks (a permanent link to a post). When this is done, keywords used in posts title will also appear in the url

Tip #2: Keyword Density

Several years ago there was much talk about keyword density within web communities. Keyword density refers to the number of times a keyword appears per hundred words in your website copy. The general consensus was that a keyword density of around 3% would acheive the desired rankings. This perception led to underhanded techniques like keyword stuffing and adding keywords that didn’t display in content (same color as the background) etc. Ultimately, search engines started penalizing sites that used these sneaky techniques by deindexing them altogether. Now a keyword density of 1% to 2% is sufficient. Keyword density can be safely increased by utilising keywords in graphics filenames and alt text attached to graphics.

Tip #3: Use Less Popular Keywords in the Body of Web Pages

While it is advisable that your domain include a popular keyword for your niche, you should also include less popular keywords in your website copy, especially long tail keywords. A long tail keyword is also known as a keyphrase and generally includes 3-5 words. These keywords have less competition, enabling you to rank well for them while you build your rank for the more popular keywords. Thus, they fulfil the important role of traffic generation while you build your sites reputation. Other related words should also be used. For example: If a site is dedicated to forex trading software then search engines will expect that other related words like; foreign exchange, exchange rates and Wall street will also be included in the site. So to optimize your blog for search engines you should ensure that you include related keywords.

As a site targets more niche related long tail keywords they automatically climb the rankings for that niche. This is the beauty of blogs. Blogs can target unlimited numbers of keywords with posts that target individual keywords. Each post is allocated an individual page which search engines index and the page ranks for the keyword targeted. Especially when permalinks are set to use post titles.

Tip #4: Create lots of quality Links

You need two kinds of links. First: incoming links (otherwise known as backlinks), these are links on external websites that point to your site. Second: internal links that link from one page of your site to another. You should create as many internal and incoming links as possible. With blogs, internal linking is semi automatic via the ‘recent post’ widget in the sidebar or the archives.

The more backlinks and internal links you have, the more important the search engines will view your site as and the higher your site will climb in the search results. Backlinks are the single most important aspect of search engine ranking. Links on related websites are far superior to those on unrelated websites however. This means if you have a site about internet marketing, you won’t want backlinks on a site about training cats as this link would provide very little ‘link love’ to your site. A link on another internet marketing site will be viewed as much more relevant, and therefore more important. So to effectively optimize your blog make sure to restrict backlinks to related sites.

Tip #5: Don’t pay for thousands of links to be created.

The final way to improve search engine rankings is not to pay services to create thousands of links to your site. While this may sound strange considering the last tip, you need to consider how these services achieve these links. In most cases they use what are known as link farms. Link farms are sites containing thousands of links to external sites. The search engines view these as ‘bad neighbourhoods’ and sites listed risk being deindexed by the search engines altogether. This means that ALL references to your site will be removed from the search engines index. This doesn’t mean that you can’t pay for backlinks at all. Using these tips to optimize your blog will give your site a higher ranking in search engines. This will result in increased traffic and lead to more money for you.

You provide the service with a niche specific article containing up to two links to your website which you then ‘spin’ using the instructions provided to create unique articles and avoid duplicate content issues. You can write this article yourself or outsource it to writers on digitalpoint forums or elance. You also provide a list of keywords you want to rank for, these will be alternated as anchor text for the links to your site. You enter these details in an online form. Search for related blogs and select up to 30 that you wish the article to appear on and click submit.
