After discussion with facebook colleagues I decided to create the addthis social bookmarking club for internet marketers and anyone else who wants to improve their website’s position in search engine results.

The purpose of the addthis social bookmarking club is to create a group of like minded people who will bookmark each others sites with social bookmarking services. A database of websites will be maintained and these sites will published to the group on a rotational basis. Each week members will receive an email containing a list of websites to visit and consider for bookmarking. IF members believe a site offers valuable content they then bookmark it.

Note: To simplify the bookmarking process I recommend installing bookmarklet code for websites available from http://www.addthis.com. Or the ‘Sociable’ bookmarklet for wordpress blogs available from Yoast.com. This blog uses the sociable plugin and I recommend it as one of the best wordpress plugins available.

Members do NOT need to visit every site on the weekly list but please attempt to bookmark at least two sites per week

The addthis social bookmark club is run on an honor system. Members are REQUESTED to bookmark sites but are not REQUIRED to. Just remember, the success or failure of this club is entirely dependent upon it’s members.

As the group grows the list of weekly sites will also grow because we don’t want 1000 members all bookmarking only 10 sites and because it would take too long for all members sites to be rotated.

The club is double opt-in and all subscriptions are handled by GetResponse email marketing which allows changes to subscription details at any time simply by clicking the link at the bottom of any message received. Members can change the website being bookmarked at any time hitting reply on a received email and sending the new website URL to be added to the database.

Bookmarking club members may also receive periodic promotional emails regarding social media & backlinking related products and services but will NEVER be contacted more than twice in one week.

There are a huge number of excellent plugins available to make blogging simpler and more profitable. When it comes to SEO plugins I recommend the ‘All in One SEO pack’ as one of the best wordpress plugins available.

The All in One SEO pack allows you to add several crucial features to each post;

• Title
• Description
• Keywords

In effect, this plugin allows you to add meta tags to individual posts compared to adding them to the blog overall (which is achieved by adding them to the index.php template).

Oh I know, there is a lot of debate as to whether meta tags are effective but the ones that are being used here are generally effective. Here is a breakdown of the individual sections.

TITLE: The title is used as the clickable text in search engines. It is also the text that appears in the colored bar at the top of each browser window. Utilizing keywords in your title increases the chances of your site coming up in search results for those keywords and if you use visitor friendly titles (rather than just keyword stuffing your title) then they also increase the chance of searchers clicking your link.

DESCRIPTION:Some search engines use this text as the summary beneath the clickable link. So once again, if you develop a well formed description for the post you will increase the chances of a searcher clicking your link rather than someone elses.

KEYWORDS: This is the tag that is most debated by SEO experts as to it’s effectiveness. The problem is that when they first developed this tag search engines relied heavily upon it and this led to people abusing the tag by using highly popular keywords in the tag even when they had nothing to do with the actual content. This is like using a keyword of ‘online dating’ on a legal firms website… it’s totally inappropriate! As a result of this abuse, search engines reduced the emphasis on the keyword tag and started focusing more on page content.

However, my experience in using this tag indicates that when appropriate keywords that match page content are used then there is a resulting increase in the amount of organic traffic coming from search engines.

Please note that it is crucial that keywords used be appropriate to page content or your site could even be penalized by search engines. SEO centro provide a free meta tag analyzer for you to compare your content to your meta tags.

The reason I believe the all in one SEO pack to be one of the best wordpress plugins (and certainly the best blog SEO plugin) is because it simplifies the addition of these elements by including fields for you to add them at the bottom of the post creation/editing page. Doing this means that you are not required to go fiddling around with blog templates and also allows you to specify tags for individual posts giving you the ability to use multiple tags for the blog based on the content of each post and page.

One of the easiest ways to get additional backlinks for any website or blog is to include social bookmarking icons on the page. Doing this allows your visitors to directly bookmark your site if they are interested. Each time your site is bookmarked you are effectively given a free backlink to improve your position in search engines.

If you saw my Best wordpress plugins post, you will see that I recommend the use of the ‘Sociable’ social bookmarking plugin available from Yoast.com

The reason I particularly love this plugin is because it currently offers a staggering 95 social bookmarking sites to choose from. As you can see at the bottom of this post, I only use a small selection of these. It’s also extremely easy to use and allows you to use your own icons if you wish.

But there were a couple of things that I wanted to change after I first installed it. To see the plugin in it’s original form take a look at http://seo.sophisticated-woman.com. As you can see, the graphics are much smaller than the ones I have used here AND they are opaque until you hover over them. I wanted to make them stand out more so I made a couple of changes to templates.

The first template change removed the opacity of the icons. First of all I went to “Appearance>Editor” in the left hand panel of the wordpress dashboard and selected “Style.css” from the right hand panel. I then added the following code to the bottom of the style.css template before clicking the update file button underneath the editor field.

Then, to increase the size of the graphics I went to the plugins page. In the list of installed plugins I located the sociable plugin and clicked the edit link beneath it. This takes you to the template pages for the plugin. In the right hand panel click ‘sociable.css’ and search for the code below. The easiest way to find this code is to click your mouse inside the editor window then click ‘ctrl f’. This will cause a dialogue box to appear (in IE) or a search bar at the bottom (in Firefox). Simply type img in the search field and click find next to find instances of the text within the editor window.

When you find this code replace the ’16px’ in the width and height lines with whatever icon size you want to use. This blog uses 48px. Please note that if you increase the size without replacing the icons you will lose image quality on the icons and end up with grainy looking graphics.

The sociable plugin uses png files for icons. To change the icons used find the icons you want to use, make sure the icons are the same file type (png) and are named exactly the same as the existing ones in the wp-content/plugins/sociable/images/ folder. Upload those images to your hosting package then access the plugin settings in your wordpresdashboard. To do this click the settings link in the left hand panel then the sociable link from the submenu. On the settings page scroll down until you find the section on ‘image directory’ then enter the full URL to the directory where you placed the replacement images. Eg. http://www.mysite.com/images. Then save the settings. In future the plugin will use that directory for it’s icons.

Please note that the replacement icons shouldn’t be uploaded into the same directory that the plugin uses by default. If you do this then your changes will be erased the next time you update the plugin. This can be a real nuisance so it’s easier to keep the images in a separate folder.

Also, in the settings for the plugin I always check the ‘use target=blank’ box to make sure that the bookmark site is opened on a separate page so that visitors do not get taken away from my site.

One of the most effective means of traffic generation today involves the use of video. Video has become extremely popular recently and google (and other search engines) have jumped on the bandwagon by ranking video highly.

Here is a simple method to create a potentially huge network of interlinking sites all pointing to your website or blog

Step 1: Create a video about the topic of your website. It doesn’t have to be high quality. A video of yourself talking filmed on a digital camera is quite adequate.

Step 2: Visit tubemogul.com and create a free membership if you don’t already have one.Use tubemogul to submit your video to youtube, viddler, google video etc. If you’re not a member of these sites you may need to become one. Don’t forget to label your videos with your chosen keywords

Step 3: Visit the video sharing sites where you video has been submitted and collect the permanent link to your video.

Step 4: Submit those links to social bookmarking sites via socialmarker. Once again, if you are not a member of the bookmarking sites you may need to become one. It’s free to do and once it’s done you don’t need to worry about it again (It’s helpful to use the same login ID and password for all of them but keep it different to the details of secure sites like paypal etc)

Step 5: Submit your profile page on video sharing sites to social bookmarking sites via socialmarker.

Step 6: Create profile pages on facebook, myspace, hubpages, squidoo, mylot etc and post your video links there. Include a link to your website if possible. If you can’t but you can add graphics then create a graphics file containing your domain name and insert it on your page (or use as wallpaper)

Step 7: Submit those profile pages to social bookmarking sites.

Step 8: Create a blog if you don’t already have one. Publish posts containing or pointing to your videos, video sharing site profile pages, profile pages on facebook, myspace, hubpages, squidoo, mylot etc

Step 9: YOU GOT IT!!! Submit those posts to social bookmarking sites

Step 10: Submit your blog rss feeds to squidoo, hubpages etc.

Doing this creates a large network of interlinking sites. In time your videos will dominate page one of google for your chosen keywords (as long as you have used your keywords in your links to them where possible)

So basically… the process involves repeatedly:

1. Creating
2. Linking
3. Bookmarking

One of the most important aspects of SEO is the number of backlinks (links on external sites that point to your site) that your site has. Large numbers of backlinks (especially those on related sites) give search engines an indicator of how important a website is. The more backlinks, the more important a site is considered to be. There are certain things to keep in mind when backlinking however.

1. Backlinks on related websites are far more important than backlinks on unrelated sites

One of the best ways to backlink is via social bookmarking sites. Probaby because these are viewed as independant reviews of your site. The exciting thing is that you can even encourage your website visitors to create backlinks for you via this method. How do you do this??? Simple: You install social bookmarking buttons such as the addthis social bookmarking button or the socialmarker.com bookmarking button.

At the end of this post you will see this little image This nifty little ‘widget’ allows visitors to bookmark your site to their favourite bookmarking service.

I’m currently hunting for a bookmarking widget with larger icons… perhaps even separate icons that will be even more ‘in the face’ of visitors. When I find a way to do this I will update this post.

So how do you encourage visitors to bookmark your site? Provide quality content they’ll want to refer back to. Providing a bookmarking button makes the process much easier for them. Of course, every time someone bookmarks your site you receive an extra backlink, This will help your site receive good rankings in the search engines.
